Njia Panda Ya Tumaini, Kitale
| Project: | The project in Kitale was set up in 1992 after severe droughts and a series of tribal clashes forced several people to leave their homes. These events left a large number of children with nowhere to go other than the streets of Kitale town. Kitale has been spared severe drought and extreme tribal violence in the interim years but still today there are a considerable number of children on the streets. Children escaping from abject poverty and abuse in their home, others who have no family left thanks to the scourge of HIV/AIDS. |

Railway Children supports the NPYT Birunda transit home about 12 kilometres outside of the town. Project staff spend time on the streets, in the slums and in the police stations of Kitale town. The children they find alone and at risk are offered some safety, comfort and friendship in Birunda. Children stay here for some time while there needs are assessed and where they can re adjust to their childhood and make decisions about there future. Many children our reunited with their families with support from NPYT, others are found long term placements in care homes and older children are helped to build skills for independent living. Railway Children has also provided support to help construct a second dormitory at Birunda so that both boys and girls can be housed separately and in comfort. The vehicle has also been replaced for the countless journeys between town and the Birunda home. |
