You might get wet and muddy three times and want to be warm and dry in between so bring plenty of changes of clothes. We probably will not be able to provide shower facilities but standpipes and running water should be available en route. The correct equipment is essential and these are our recommendations: Footwear Good boots are essential. Ankle support is a must, especially on Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike where large stones and scree can inflict damage. Make sure you break-in your boots before the event, as blisters could be a disaster. Approach shoes and cross trainers are not suitable for the event. Anyone arriving wearing such footwear will not be able to take part as they do not afford suitable protection. FOOTWEAR MUST COME ABOVE THE ANKLE. If you have any queries about your boots, contact Katie Mason on 01270 251571.
You must have waterproofs with you throughout the event. It is essential that you have a wind and waterproof outer-shell garment whilst on the mountain. Gore-Tex or an equivalent fabric is ideal. These will need to be carried in a rucksack together with some spare warm clothing. Wet weather can lead to a high chill factor so over-trousers are recommended. Hats and Gloves Hats and gloves are essential if the weather is cold or wet. Much of the body's heat is lost through the heat. Alternatively the sun can be strong so do carry a sun hat as well. General Layers of clothing are better than a very heavy single layer. Ideally there should be three distinct layers:
Spare Clothes It is good practice to carry a spare set of clothes, especially those worn next to the skin. When you complete a descent it is likely you will be wet with perspiration and therefore chilly. Walking Poles These could be invaluable should a team member find some areas difficult or in case of fatigue. Two sets per team are strongly recommended. Head Torches Each member of your team must carry a head torch and spare batteries. These are essential for the night climb of Snowdon. Hand held torches do not provide a steady beam of light whilst walking and are not sufficient. Anyone arriving without a head torch will not be allowed to climb. First Aid Kit We strongly recommend you bring Second Skin, ideal for blisters. We also suggest you bring adhesive and non-adhesive dressings (large and small), triangular bandages, Zinc Oxide tape, antiseptic wipes, crepe bandages and safety pins, disposable gloves and scissors.
