Protecting Yourself at Work

Getting your first job is a big step. It’s a great way to build confidence, connect with colleagues and gain some independence.

Knowing a few of your essential rights will help you stay protected and make the most of your time at work.

1. Have a copy of your contract: You should have a written job offer and a written statement of terms within two months. Red flags include: zero transparency, illegal deductions and unclear hours.

2. Your right to equal treatment: You can’t be discriminated against because of age, race, gender, sexuality, disability, religion, etc.

3. Safety in your environment: It is your employer’s responsibility to keep you safe. You have the right to training, equipment and supervision.

4. Pay: It’s important to be aware of the National Minimum Wage for your age group (info available here), when you’ll be paid and any deductions.

5. Hours, rest breaks and time off: You have a right to a maximum number of weekly hours, breaks during shifts, weekly rest, paid holiday entitlement and sick pay.

6. If something feels wrong: Speak to a manager, HR or a trusted colleague. Keep written notes of what happened.

Working can develop independence, build important skills, introduce you to new friends and bring in some much-needed cash. And by knowing your rights, you can ensure it remains a positive experience – the websites below give more information and support.
