Start date:
6th September 2026

Location:
London

Registration Fee:
£50

A one-of-a-kind guided experience

Explore the Northern Heights is a unique, small-group experience that takes you along a disused railway line once destined to become part of the London Underground – but never completed.

Led by expert guides, this exclusive day brings the past to life as you travel by train, walk along the historic Parkland Walk, and visit rarely seen parts of London’s railway network.

With just 28 places available, this is a rare opportunity for rail enthusiasts, history lovers and curious explorers alike.

This event is independently organised by supporter Nathaniel Dodd, in aid of Railway Children.

What to expect

Starting at 9:45am on Sunday 6th September 2026, your day will include:

  • A train journey with Great Northern from Moorgate to Finsbury Park
  • A guided walk along the disused railway line through Parkland Walk Nature Reserve
  • A visit to the abandoned Highgate High Level station
  • A private tube journey from Highgate Depot to Mill Hill East via East Finchley
  • A vintage private bus tour to the Edgware Northern line terminus

A discounted lunch option will also be available at The Old White Lion Pub & Restaurant.

Spaces are extremely limited and this event sells out each year.

About the route

The route you’ll explore was originally built in the 19th century and later formed part of ambitious plans to extend the Northern line across North London – known as the Northern Heights project.

Although work began, the plans were never completed, leaving behind a network of disused tracks, stations and tunnels that still shape the landscape today.

Today, sections of this former railway survive as the Parkland Walk – London’s longest local nature reserve following an old rail line.
