Divided into East and West, The Midlands is home to 10.9 million people and has a younger than average population.
Although we aren’t yet able to offer one-to-one support in the area, we work with rail staff and the community to raise awareness of safeguarding young people on rail.
Raising awareness at Wolverhampton Station of safeguarding young people on rail, particularly during busy school holiday season.
Also, we partnered with local charities at tram, rail and bus stations in Nottingham to raise awareness of safety and services for young people in the area.
Working alongside the Carlisle Security team, we recently welcomed school children to Lichfield Station for a community engagement event focused on rail safety. Through conversations and interactive activities, pupils learned more about staying safe around the railway and the importance of making safe choices when travelling.
We supported Network Rail’s Rail Safety Week engagement activities at Stoke-on-Trent and Stafford stations. Working alongside the Samaritans, Avanti West Coast and Amulet Security, we spoke with passengers about staying safe on and around the railway, highlighting the importance of partnership working in promoting rail safety and wellbeing.
During A Million Acts of Hope Week we highlighted the incredible work Uzma in the West Midlands does every day as a Community Engagement Worker.
Our Community Engagement Workers engage with the public, look out for signs of vulnerability, help children stay safe on the railway and support rail industry colleagues to safeguard young people.
It’s all in a day’s work and it’s helping build hope in our communities.
As a Community Engagement Worker in the West Midlands, Uzma enjoys doing joint patrols along the networks, organising pop ups at stations to promote rail safety and working collaboratively with other organisations to safeguard children and young people.
The three-day route took cyclists from Ebbsfleet International to Dover, Dover to Brighton and Brighton to London Waterloo, raising vital funds to support vulnerable children.
