On Thursday 25th September, representatives from across the rail sector attended the 5th annual Railway Children Golf Day at Hanbury Manor, Hertfordshire, held in partnership with Advance TRS.
Spearheaded by long-time supporter Andy Ridout, the event brought together peers, colleagues and clients for a day of networking and fundraising in support of the charity’s life-changing work. Participants enjoyed an 18-hole round under favourable conditions, including a Beat the Pro challenge with professional golfer Harry Goddard.
The evening dinner featured an address from RIA Chair Noel Travers, providing insights into the future of the UK rail industry, followed by after-dinner entertainment from former England rugby international Kyran Bracken.
The event raised over £20,000, bringing the total generated since the Golf Day’s inception to more than £100,000 — a testament to the continued generosity of industry partners and participants.
The Ride the Route cycling challenge once again proved a standout success, with 60 riders completing a demanding three-day journey from Liverpool to Darlington via Scarborough in September.
Despite challenging climbs and changeable weather, participants demonstrated outstanding commitment, supported by eight volunteer crew members providing logistical and welfare assistance throughout the route.
The event, sponsored by AtkinsRéalis, VolkerRail and Arcadis, and supported by Hitachi, Alstom, and Network Rail, raised an impressive £74,000 for Railway Children.
Now in its fourth year, Ride the Route continues to grow in both participation and fundraising. Planning for the 2026 challenge is already underway, reflecting the strong appetite within the industry to support the initiative.
The Rail Trail walking challenge marked its fourth year, bringing together 170 participants (and three dogs) to walk the overground route of the TfL Central tube line in support of Railway Children.
Walking Participants selected from three route options — the 10km Sidetrack, 20km Branch Line, and the 52km Main Line, which saw 20 walkers cover the full line distance from Ealing Broadway to Epping. The event combined physical challenge with the opportunity to explore London’s landmarks and lesser-known areas, all while supporting a vital cause.
This year’s Rail Trail, sponsored by Stadler and generously supported by Transport for London (TfL), raised £40,000. The event has become a popular fixture in the fundraising calendar, recognised for its organisation, atmosphere, and inclusivity.
Collectively, these events have raised more than £130,000, funding essential interventions to help children and young people at risk on the streets and railways.
Jack Miller, Group Director of Fundraising and Marketing at Railway Children, said:
“Once again, the rail industry has demonstrated exceptional generosity, teamwork, and commitment. These events not only raise vital funds but also highlight the collective power of our sector to make a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable children. We are extremely grateful to every organisation and individual who took part or supported these initiatives.”
Railway Children continues to welcome further industry involvement and is encouraging new partners, teams, and individuals to participate in future events and challenges.
